ITS (International Typographic Style)

Exercise 1

The International Typographic Style is also known as Swiss design which was a design movement that emerged in Switzerland and Germany during the 1950s. This design movement has and still is a major contributor and influence to design. The ITS makes use of a mathematical constructed grid with San Serif- type set in flush left and ragged right margin. The ITS with the use of the grid structure made it possible for the creation of clear, clean and order to be achieved in designs. Below are examples of contemporary logo designs that have made use of a grid.

Examples ITS

This above illustrates the geometrical as you can see the rectangles are formed just with clean straight lines.  In this logo the use of grids are clear as the illustration is placed above and in the middle of the text and the use of San-serif type.

Taking a look at the logo of ‘Suit Africa’ you can clearly see the ITS principles within it.  The use of  geometric shapes placed in the illustration of the suit used in the ‘U’ is typical ITS.  The designer of this logo made use San serif type throughout the entire design.
